"He said, tell me about that horse standing underneath the tree. I would guess she is mighty old and slow. I bet you couldn´t get a hundred dollars for her now, you probably should have sold her years ago.

Well I was where when she was born and helped her to her feet. Her little legs where week and slightly bowed.
I helped her find her mamas milk and when just stood and watched. I could almost see that baby start to grove.

Her mama was a friend of mine I had her all her life. I knew that she had almost run her race when that filly came along. I could see it in her eyes Yeah she`s the one to take her mamas place.

I never bothered naming her she was Filly from the start, shortened down to Fil as years went by. But names don´t really matter much it´s attitude that counts and in cowboylanguage what she had was "try". Yeah try is what that filly had and a will to please. I´ve never known a horse that tried so hard,
bursting through a snowdrift to save an orphan calf or just hauling my two kid round the yard.

I rode that mare a million miles in every kind of weather. She go on round just like she didn´t care.  But everytime I tacked her up and swung up in the saddle she crow up on me just to let me know she´s there. My wife said she just liked me, she´s broke but she´s not broken. That mare and you are pretty much the same. A little ruff around the edges running with the wind. A spirit that is a bit to wild to tame.

She spends most days just standing under the shade of that big tree. I guess that is what an old mare really needs. Maybe she remembers all the battles won an lost, more likely she is just waiting for her feed. Now you may think she´s not worth much and I guess you have a little bit right, but she is one thing your money just can´t buy.  And someday when i have to lay her underneath that tree,  we´ll see if cowboys really never cry."   Vaughn Wilson
